A GAME FOR PEOPLE WHO SUCK:

BLOODWORK is a rules-medium RPG about raucous vampires in a mostly-modern city. Play out your late 90's urban-vamp fantasy in this standalone game system. Maybe you're obsessed with Blade, maybe you love Buffy, or maybe you thought Neo should have had fangs! All this and more is possible in this new game from BIGBOYGAMETIME.

A LOVE LETTER TO THE CITY:

My aesthetic tastes may run rampant in this book, but when it’s your turn to run the game, inject it with every grungy, gothic, and metropolitan influence you love. Blast old records, flip through zines, admire ripped flyers on phone poles. Make a mixtape for your first goth crush. Do whatever it takes to get into that headspace.

I’m tempted to say you’re at an advantage if you were an adult by the time 1990 rolled around. I’m tempted to say this will make you better at running the game. But I think that’s self-doubt talking. As much as this game is influenced by the aesthetic of a dirty 90’s city, it is by no means a reflection of one. It’s Chicago too. It’s my twenties. It’s who I was scared to be dating, zine swaps under the train, a house party full of too-warm bodies. It’s checking your shadow, carrying a knife to the waterfront. It’s doing print runs in your bedroom.

A lady never tells her age, but I was a baby in the 90’s. By the time I could experience the life I watched in movies it had all but left the city, if it ever existed. But there were vestiges of course. Aesthetic lines take a while to die. This game is as much a portrait of my love for cities as it is a nostalgia for a chapter I didn’t get to have in them.

It’s imagined. It’s pre-internet dating. It’s goth clubs and acid bass. It’s boys in band tees that are long-now-dead, battle jackets smattered with local acts, and DIY venues that actually last. It’s gutterpunks. It’s neon weapons. It’s an industrial rave in an endless downpour, magic graffiti, and spellbook zines. It’s a morningstar tattoo. Necks bitten, hickies, shadowmarks, and shock collars. It’s city streets awash with blood, a flaming blade on the train. A severed hand at the bus stop. A demon in the sewers. A crush. A callout. A catastrophe. It’s the revolution, it’s here, and it’s happening. It’s vampire freaks in the city.
